Reasons and solutions for discontinuing trackers

As you may have heard, Augment has decided to discontinue trackers.

Trackers have served us well since we launched Augment in 2013. Being able to scan and share 2D images gave new users to augmented reality an opportunity to anchor the emerging world of 3D to the 2D. But it is now time to raise that anchor ⚓️.

There have been incredible advancement in augmented reality, not just in its technology but also in mainstream awareness. Newer mobile devices ☎️📲 with greater processing power, along with the advent of Apple's ARKit and Google's ARCore, has enabled users to have a better 3D visualization experience. With these advancements though, we have also seen a decline in the demand for trackers from our users.

We have therefore decided to stop support of trackers and focus more of our energy on creating a better user experience in the way of the future -- integrating ARKit and ARCore for a trackerless, and honestly, better, augmented reality experience.

We are, of course, still incredibly thankful for the service of trackers and how customers have found the most innovative and unexpected uses for them.

When is this happening? What do I do now?
ou can still share your 3D models using QR codes, either through a link or by printing them out. These QR codes can be scanned by any standard QR code reader (like your device's camera app) so no need to ensure that your audience already has the Augment app. Click here to learn how.

So what's next?
We are continuing to optimize our app and as we all know, this technology is moving quickly so we have to race to keep up!

Soon, you'll get to see what we've been working on for the past few months. All iOS and Android users will soon get a major upgrade to their Augment app so stay tuned!
